Grace is a teacher partner on our Storyteller Project at Carbondale Middle School. She was named the 2019 English as a Second Language Teacher of the Year by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education.
Lucia Campbell
Glenwood Springs Middle School
ELL Teacher
Lucia worked with us to design a personal narrative writing project at GSMS with the aim of disrupting negative stereotypes of immigrants and immigration. The project involved visual journaling, all-school storytelling assemblies, and writing. Lucia also opened her classroom to theater workshops designed to build confidence and language skills.
“As a result of this collaboration, I have seen students grow more confident about sharing their writing. The on-demand/improvised nature of writing exercises have helped to reinforce the notion of writing as a process with a purpose that is first and foremost about generating and sharing ideas. The interactive activities have given students a sense of immediate feedback about their writing. Our unit work is much richer as a consequence. I appreciate that VOICES is not an added but rather an integrated and enriching element to our class. ”
